Americans have turned deep-frying into a sport, and the arrival of county fair season means it’s time for the nation’s annual showcase of fried fare. Despite nonstop warnings about the health risks of obesity and the importance of low-fat eating, chefs across the country continue to dream up artery-clogging creations.
Most recently, the New York State Fair has unleashed what it calls the “Big Kahuna Burger” – a 1500-calorie quarter-pound burger wedged between a halved donut, with bacon and toppings galore.
Anything can be fried. Not just food, but also drinks. That’s what Charlie Boghosian of “Chicken Charlie’s,” a mainstay fair in southern California, proved when he decided to make deep-fried Kool-Aid balls – which he said sold like deep-fried hot cakes.
Fried oreo cookies have rapidly become a fave at fairs across the nation.
Fried beer made its debut in Texas just last year, when chef Mark Zable was determined to win the State Fair of Texas. According to Zable, it took him three years to perfect the Guinness-filled recipe.
